ALQUERÍA DEL DUC

Opposite the Aula de la Natura, surrounded by orange trees and in full marjal, there is the Alquería del Duc, a fortified construction of the XVI century. The square shaped building consists of two floors and has a central courtyard.

The tower located in one of the corners is according to experts, of Muslim origin and was built for defensive purposes. Next to the alqueria there are remains of a necropolis from the Visigothic period. In 1590, the youngest of the children of San Francisco de Borja, Alfonso de Borja y Castro, turned it into a lordly recreational and hunting lodge.

In 1996 a collaboration agreement was signed between the Generalitat and the Gandia City Council to coordinate the Tourism Center "L'Alqueria del Duc", through which the building was rehabilitated and transformed. Nowadays, classes relating to trades dealing with tourism and gastronomy are taught in this very building.
